The install manual, boiled down to what matters on this job

Text the model number from the data plate or the box. CrewBuddy finds the manufacturer’s installation instructions and lists the requirements that apply to your install, with page numbers.

What you send: The brand and model number, what you are installing or replacing, and where it is going, such as a garage, closet or attic.
What you send
What you get: The manual’s link, the requirements for this install with page numbers, and anything that differs from the unit you are replacing.

Text it like this

Fictional example.

You: Northline NL-50E water heater going in a garage. What does the manual say about clearances and the drain pan?
CrewBuddy: Manual dated 2025, rev C. Clearances: 2 in sides and back, 24 in front for service. Garage install: elements 18 in off the floor where required by code. Drain pan required where a leak could cause damage, with a 3/4 in drain line. Pages 6 to 9, link below.

Why the manual matters

The International Residential Code says appliances are installed according to their listing, their label and the manufacturer’s instructions, and that the instructions stay attached to the appliance. Inspectors check against them, and warranties often depend on them. Finding the right manual for the exact model is the slow part, which is the part CrewBuddy does.

It searches the manufacturer’s site for the installation instructions, opens the PDF and reads the sections for your install: clearances, venting or combustion air, gas or electrical requirements, condensate or drain, mounting, and the warranty conditions. Each point comes with the page number.

Replacements and differences

If you are swapping an old unit, text that model too. CrewBuddy compares the two and flags what changes: a bigger footprint, a different vent size, a new breaker size, a condensate line where there was none. Those usually become line items on the quote or parts on the supply list.

Some manufacturers put manuals behind a dealer login, and some older models have no manual online. CrewBuddy says when it could not find the exact one rather than using a similar model’s.

Model numbers are long and easy to mistype. A photo of the data plate works as well as typing it.
